The acronym “TEFL” stands for “Teaching English as a Foreign Language”.

TEFL is what you do when you teach English in a country where they have their mother tongue or first language. You can TEFL in countries like Spain, France, Argentina, Greece, The Philippines, Thailand, Japan, China and the list just goes on. TEFL jobs can be found in countries where English in the first language. When you do a TEFL course, you learn how to teach English to non-English speakers normally living in a country where English is not the first language. You can be teaching a group of Japanese, Chinese, French, Spanish nationals in an English class in the middle of Tokyo Town in Hino City! You are still on TEFL mode because the mother tongue in Japan is not English.

TESOL is what you do when you teach English in a country where English is the mother tongue or first language. If you find yourself teaching a group of immigrants in a community college in Lower Manhattan, in New York City, you will use your TESOL knowledge base. You may find yourself teaching a group composed of nationalities as diverse as Lithuanian, Russian, Polish, Guatemalan, Armenian, Ukrainian, Chilean and the only common language between you and your class is English. In this case you will be on TESOL mode because you are teaching English to different nationalities in a country where the mother tongue is English.
