Language acquisition in TEFL
Language acquisition is the process of learning a language–both how to speak and understand it. To teach English effectively and guarantee your students’ success, it is crucial to understand this process.
There are several reasons why understanding how language acquisition works is critical in TEFL. First, as an English teacher, it will help you understand the learning needs of your students. Second, it will help you to choose the right teaching methods to use in your class sessions. Language acquisition theories can help you to properly select the appropriate techniques to use depending on your class objectives.
Third, understanding language acquisition can help you to foster a creative learning environment in your classroom. When creativity is incorporated into TEFL, students not only maximise their learning and speed up their progress, but they also have more fun learning English!
Understanding language acquisition can also help you to deal with the individual differences of your English language learners. It will help you to facilitate skills related to language production.
Furthermore, understanding language acquisition will aid in developing fluency. It will also give you the chance to incorporate the use of technology and other resources in your TEFL classes. It comes in handy as well when people decide to pursue continuous professional development.

Language acquisition: An EBC graduate’s perspective
Amir, one of our EBC Trinity CertTESOL course graduates shared his thoughts on language acquisition, and how taking our course was a great experience for him. Having graduated in psychology, Amir has always been interested in the language acquisition process. Given that he is a multilingual himself, he is no stranger to it.
“My mother tongue is Persian,” he told EBC in a graduate interview. “I’ve learned English since I was eight. We (also) learned Arabic… French…and I’ve learned German since I was 17. (Plus) a little bit of Polish.”
With a degree in psychology, Amir also shared his interest in neuroscience, sharing his fascination with learning new languages as well as the brain system. “How does it work?” he asked.
These interests, together with his plans to move abroad to pursue neuroscience studies and teach in England, got him searching for the right TEFL course.
“I was looking through job websites,” he shared. “And I found out that teaching English in London–in the UK, is a good job. So I looked through the opportunities and all of them want international degrees such as TESOL. So I asked my previous teachers who had that experience.”
He also told us about the lack of such courses in Iran. “As you know, in Iran, we do not have this kind of course because of the sanctions and this kind of thing,” he said. “We have to take the course online or in countries near us, such as Turkey, Emirates and these kinds of countries. I looked through the Trinity website and I chose EBC because of the time and the comments that I have received. I actually searched through the net and found some good comments.”
