What is CPD (Continuing Professional Development) for English teachers?

Table of Contents

What is CPD?

A CPD course is the key to taking your English teaching to the next level. EBC Trinity CertPT courses are classified as Ofqual level 6 continuing professional development courses (CPD) for teachers. Read about the different courses and their descriptions.

First, however, be inspired by watching this testimonial video by Dale, a Trinity CertPT in Business English graduate. In his CPD course, he learned how to effectively analyse and adapt material for his classes.

Trinity CertPT teaching Business English CPD course

A Trinity College London accredited Ofqual diploma level 6 teacher training CPD course in teaching Business English.

Accredited Business English teaching course – Trinity CertPT BE CPD

This CPD course fills theoretical and practical gaps in knowledge for teachers working with teenagers and adults learning Business English. In addition, you can use the skills you learn in a single language and multilingual classroom.

The CPD course addresses the challenges of international business environments and therefore concentrates on the Communicative Approach (CLT) as the primary teaching method.

EBC has designed the CertPT in Business English CPD course to adapt to teachers with little or no business English teaching experience up to those with a deeper understanding.

The difference between Business English and General English students

We also address why Business English students differ from General English students because they need to strengthen their knowledge and practical approaches to improving internal and customer-facing communication.

Teaching Business English involves teaching English to adults working in businesses of one kind or another or preparing to work in the field of business. The companies could be large multinationals, small private companies or even state-run concerns about providing products or services. Courses may be long or short, and classes may be taught in-company, in a language school, on rented premises or online.

The aims of Business English

Business English has much in common with General English but, in many ways, is different since the aims of a Business English CPD course may radically differ from those of a General English course.

Remember that the aims of Business English teaching, whether broad or narrow, will always relate to students’ work. Sometimes this will mean teaching generalised business skills, such as giving presentations, and sometimes it will mean something much more technical or academic.

The main thing to remember when considering what Business English is, relates to expectations. Not so much your expectations but those of your students or their sponsors. Course organisers will have requested Business English because they want a course related to occupational or professional language needs.

Investigating, analysing and fulfilling Business English students’ needs are critical to the success of any Business English course. Therefore, a great deal of attention should be paid to the language needs research process. After all, you can only plan, design and give a good Business English class session if you truly know your target audience.

Without a good understanding of what your students need, how can you develop a Business English CPD course that is tailored to their needs and requirements? This CertPT course in business English aims to help you find, tailor, adapt and develop material that will engage your students and improve their learning experience and your teaching experience.

Trinity CertPT in CLIL teaching CPD course

A Trinity College London accredited Ofqual diploma level 6 teacher training CPD course in Content and Language Integrated Learning.

Accredited CLIL course, teach Content and Language Integrated Learning CPD

This CPD course shows you how to build an effective CLIL teaching environment for any age capable of learning and understanding English. The subject matter is taught in English, but you learn how to adapt your methods to a multilingual classroom.

Furthermore, the CPD course addresses specific challenges, so the Communicative Approach (CLT) approach is crucial. EBC has designed the CertPT CLIL for teachers with little or no knowledge of CLIL, up to those with a deeper understanding. We also address why CLIL is not the same as General English and why students are allowed to use their native language in class.

The CLIL approach

CLIL is an approach to learning content through English. The result is the students improve their English and learn a new skill. CLIL is based on the principles of language immersion.

The European Commission identified the approach as very important because it provides effective opportunities for students to use their new language skills immediately. Simply put, CLIL opens doors to languages for a wide range of learners and encourages self-confidence.

This approach involves learning a wide array of subjects. For example, the subjects could be history, geography, IT, technical, or managerial skills.

CLIL can successfully improve language learning, skills and non-lingual subjects. In addition, it will help learners develop a positive attitude toward themselves because the material is accessible and relevant.

The European Commission encourages teachers to start “…enhancing the language competencies in general, to promote teaching non-linguistic subjects in foreign languages”. In other words, the European Union is encouraging teachers to learn CLIL skills which should mean an increased demand for CLIL-trained teachers.

This CertPT course in CLIL aims to help you find, tailor, adapt and develop material that will engage your students, encourage communication and improve their learning experience and your teaching experience.

Trinity CertPT in CLT CPD course

A Trinity College London accredited Ofqual diploma level 6 teacher training CPD course in Communicative Language Teaching.

Accredited Communicative Language Teaching course – Trinity CertPT CLT CPD

This CPD course shows you how to build an effective CLT teaching environment for any age capable of learning and understanding English. We show you how to facilitate communicating and interacting in English in a controlled manner. Find out how to identify and source authentic material to engage your students in active communication.

EBC has designed the CertPT CLT for teachers with little or no knowledge of CLT, up to those with a deeper understanding. Discover how to create learning opportunities focusing on the language and the learning management process.

See why your students’ experiences are crucial to learning, motivation and material engagement. Learn how to link your classroom language with the world in which your students live. CLT is a teaching approach highlighting the importance of authentic communication for learning.

Therefore, language use across the four core skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing takes priority because conveying and understanding messages lets you function in the real world. Also, since the learners will one day have to cope with the real world’s challenges, the target functions, notions and language items are usually contextualised in real-life situations and tasks.

The primary goal of communicative language teaching

Successful communication is the primary goal of communicative language teaching. Given this, the focus is on learners communicating an authentic message in their particular context and making themselves understood.

Although accuracy is desired, it is not the primary goal. For example, a learner who communicates more information with a few mistakes is more likely to communicate successfully than one who conveys very little with no errors. Therefore, the CLT approach should motivate students to communicate. Given this, it is essential to use relevant and engaging content for learners.

This CertPT course in Communicative Language Teaching aims to help you find, tailor, adapt and develop material that will engage your students, encourage communication and therefore improve their learning experience and your teaching experience.

Trinity CertPT teaching English online CPD course

A Trinity College London accredited Ofqual diploma level 6 teacher training CPD course in online teaching.

Accredited teaching English online course CPD

This CPD course fills theoretical and practical gaps in knowledge for teaching all ages online. You can use the skills you learn in a single language and multilingual classroom. In addition, the course addresses the challenges of creating, resourcing and managing your virtual classroom.

EBC has designed the CertPT for teaching English online for teachers with little or no experience to those who have experience. We also address why a virtual classroom differs from a physical classroom and how to overcome the differences.

The demand for online teaching skills

Online teaching is now an in-demand skill. While the days of a chat-style class using Skype are over, today’s online teaching environment is a virtual classroom. You now have the equivalent of a whiteboard and the ability to divide your students into groups, plus you can use all types of multi-media material.

In the online teaching world, you still need a lesson plan but due to the flexibility of the virtual classroom, your material is key. Your students will expect integrated learning using stimulating material.

You need to think about the way you present your material. Will you use the virtual whiteboard or smartboard? Will you create presentations, videos, audios, etc?

The purpose of this CertPT course in Online Teaching is to help you find, tailor, adapt and develop material that will engage your students, encourage communication and therefore improve their learning experience and your teaching experience.

Course format

All CertPT CPD courses follow the same format described in the next sections. The difference in the courses is the specialised material for the CertPT subject.
